Budget: £1.3 Million      Service: Complete M&E Installation

Brief Description: The project ran from September 2014 to June 2015 consisting of a new building educational building constructed by the Principle Contractor Farrans Limited, with a contract sum of £6.5mil.

Trevor Jones Contracting successfully secured the Mechanical and Electrical package for the entire project, circa. £1.3mil.

Work undertaken

During the nine month construction period, Trevor Jones Contracting undertook the following installations in addition to submitting Technical Data prior to sign off, of all items to be installed such as AC, AHUs, Pumps, Tanks, Sanitary ware etc.

  • All electrical installations over the 3 storey construction to include both single and three phase supplies to classrooms, workshops, offices, toilets, showers etc.
  • LED lighting installations throughout.
  • Air conditioning units in the form of ceiling mounted cassettes & Heat recovery units to include fresh air supplies to all rooms.
  • Rainwater Harvesting, including the supply and fit of the storage tanks both inside and out.
  • All hot and cold water services throughout that would be associated with a building of this type.
  • PV (22KW) installation to serve both this building and the neighboring SLDD.
  • Extraction Cabinets to the science room.
  • Solder extraction to the electronics workshop.
  • High level, Low Voltage Recoil supplies to the Electrical workshop along with Compressed Air and Vacuum as required.

All the above to achieve BREEAM Excellence.

Areas of Identified Risk

The site was part of the larger Isle of Wight College site in Newport on the Isle of Wight were there were a number of risks in respect of it being a live College for most of the construction period, plus the unusual day to day risks concerned with a live Construction Site.

Identified areas:

  • Restricted/shared access.
  • Some works within the occupied buildings during the main program.
  • Working at height/falls from height.
  • Loading and unloading of deliveries.
  • Manual handling.
  • Operatives working in conjunction with other trades and on a tight program.
  • Alterations and revisions to the Specification as the project progressed involving re visits to areas part/fully completed.
  • External works alongside the ground works such as mains gas, water and electrical installations to serve the new building.

All reasonable steps were taken to minimize risk.
